Biography

Bob Weir is a long time Leaside resident. He was an accomplished swimmer in his youth and developed a lasting interest in long distance swimming. Bob’s first long-distance swim was in 1964 at the age of 21 when he crossed Lake Winnipeg. In 1965, he became the first person to swim across Lake Manitoba.

In 1989 after a 25 year long distance swimming hiatus, his first marathon attempt occurred when he became the 23rd person to successfully cross Lake Ontario. In 1991 he successfully conquered a combined Lake Couchiching-Lake Simcoe swim. In 1992, he swam across Lake Erie and in 1993 Bob, at the age of 50, became the first person to swim the 21 miles of Lake Winnipesaukee.
From 1991 until 1994, Bob was President of Masters Swimming Ontario.

Bob became involved with Solo Swims of Ontario in 1989, and was President from 1992 to 2006. He has successfully coached more swimmers across Lake Ontario than any other person.
