Biography
Dr. Sidney Soanes received a doctorate in physics from the University of Toronto in 1946 and was a founding member of the Leaside skating club in 1952. For over fifty years he served the sport of figure skating as an author, committee member, judge and referee. As an International Skating Union judge, Dr. Soanes oversaw thousands of competitions and tests. One of the most highly-respected authorities on ice dance judging, he wrote Ice Dancing – A Manual for Judges and Skaters, which continues to serve as the ice dance judges’ bible. In 1967, he was awarded a Centennial Medal for his contribution and in 1992 he was inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of fame for his contributions to the sport of figure skating.
